Institute for Humanistic Studies and Bioethics (EMHIHSB)
The Eugenio María de Hostos Institute for Humanistic Studies and
Bioethics (EMHIHSB), was founded in 1995 and is administratively under
the Deanship for Academic Affairs. Its main goals are: 1) To develop and
strengthen the humanistic perspective within the health professions, with
emphasis on bioethics; 2) To train health professionals in the comprehension,
analysis, evaluation, and application of methods used in humanistic disciplines;
and 3) To collaborate with the MSC faculty in the promotion and development
of ethical principles among students and health professionals. In this
context, Institute-sponsored faculty training seminars, symposia, public
lectures, and continuing education activities constitute significant academic
offerings. These activities are aimed at creating a humanistic environment
and awareness of the intricate relationships between the health sciences
professions and the humanistic tradition of the University and our society.
Given the importance of bioethical issues for the Puerto Rican community
and for women, the W&HCenter has sponsored activities in collaboration
with the Institute. The latest was a forum on bioethical issues in the
treatment of breast cancer .
