The Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) Program
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is dedicated
to increasing the number of scientists who are members of minority groups
currently underrepresented in biomedical research, including: Blacks,
Hispanics, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders. Towards this end,
NIGMS sponsors minority research through the MBRS program. The program
awards grants to educational institutions with substantial minority enrollments
in order to support research by faculty members, strengthen the institution's
biomedical research capabilities, and provide work opportunities for students
as part of a research team. To be eligible for the program, schools must
have either a 50 percent or higher minority student enrollment or, if
the minority student population is significant but less than 50 percent,
a demonstrated commitment to the special encouragement and assistance
of minority students and faculty. The Medical Sciences Campus of the University
of Puerto Rico is currently a grantee institution.
