Institute on Develop Mental Disabilities
The Institute on Developmental Disabilities of the Graduate School of
Public Health was established in 1991 under Public Law 101-496, amended
as 103-230. The program promotes the independence, productivity, integration
and inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities in society.
This is accomplished through training, exemplary services, and information
dissemination activities geared to health professionals serving the population
with developmental disabilities, the individuals themselves, and their
families.
The Institute develops state-of-the-art direct services that demonstrate
best practices that should guide community services. Information dissemination
is another means of effecting changes in the system so that it may better
serve individuals with disabilities. The Institute's main projects include
the Child Development Day Care Center, the Graduate Certificate in Developmental
Disabilities-Early Intervention Program, the Barceloneta Community Project,
The Training Initiative on Aging and Developmental Disabilities, and the
Self-Advocacy and Empowerment of Individuals with Disabilities Project.
Besides the projects described above, the Institute has a collaborative
agreement with the Department of Health in order to jointly implement
Part H of the Individuals with Disabilities Act, Program for Infants and
Toddlers, and has been designated lead agency for the Comprehensive System
for Personnel Development (CSPD).
