Clinical Microbiology Laboratory
The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory was established in 1983 at the Department
of Microbiology and Medical Zoology of the School of Medicine. It is a
Reference Laboratory for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The laboratory
performs specialized procedures such as isolation of herpes simplex virus
and chlamydia by tissue culture and monoclonal antibody techniques. The
laboratory gives technical and scientific support to both clinical and
basic research projects that require PCR procedures for the detection
of viral (i.e., HIV, HPV) genome sequences in human specimens.
