Puerto Rico AIDS Education and Training Center (PRAETC)
Created in 1988, the Puerto Rico AIDS Education and Training Center (PRAETC)
provides an array of training services for health professionals island-wide
on clinical and psychosocial aspects of HIV/AIDS. Educational and training
activities include a variety of topics in areas such as prevention, epidemiology,
clinical intervention and care, and legal aspects of HIV/AIDS. The PRAETC
also provides technical assistance on administrative and management matters
to other educational
and community based organizations which serve persons living with HIV/AIDS.
Training services are tailored to the health professionals' needs and
are offered after working hours. A network of liaisons, integrated by
representatives of community based organizations, public and private health
facilities, and professional organizations collaborate with the PRAETC
staff in the planning and development of training activities. The HIV/AIDS
curricula addresses the high transmission factor of substance abuse in
Puerto Rico and the cultural aspects of its population, and uses a training
model that facilitates the incorporation of HIV/AIDS contents in the academic
curricula. The Center has sponsored programs and conferences on HIV/AIDS
in Women.
