Selected Campus Projects Relevant to Women's Health
Center for Health Care Systems Evaluation and Sociomedical Research
The Center for Health Care Systems Evaluation and Sociomedical Research
of the Graduate School of Public Health:
Promotes and conducts research on the island's sociomedical problems
in order to seek solutions that will lead to better health conditions
and quality of life for the Puerto Rican society.
Fosters the integrated analysis and evaluation of health care services
delivery and the understanding of sociomedical problems affecting individual
and collective health in Puerto Rico.
Assesses information needs in the areas of planning, service implementation,
and public policy of health services.
Evaluates health systems and programs, and plans and conducts socio-medical
research.
Develops research instruments, offers consulting services, provides a
laboratory for evaluation of sociomedical problems for students, promotes
publishing of data and research findings.
Sponsors research exchange among researchers in Puerto Rico, the United
States, and Latin America.
The Center's research is planned and developed by a group of biomedical
and sociomedical researchers (physicians, epidemiologists, anthropologists,
psychologists, and others) following in an interdisciplinary approach.
Faculty from the Graduate School of Public Health and other schools at
the Medical Sciences Campus participate in the Center's research. Collaborators
and consultants from abroad also participate in numerous activities. Several
important research projects currently in progress are: Mental Health Services
Utilization in Puerto Rico, AIDS and Prostitution, Adolescents at Risk
of Contracting AIDS, Women and AIDS, Prevention of High Risk Behaviors
for HIV in Women, and Availability of Preventive Services for High Risk
HIV+ Selected Populations. The Center for Health Systems Evaluation will
be responsible for evaluating the COE. Dr. Margarita Alegría, Center
Director, and her colleagues, Dr. Mildred Vera and Dr. Carmen Albizu,
will assist in this endeavor.
